about

Andi Stechers solo record “austreiben / antreiben” is a work about / personal take on mask traditions / pre christian alpine traditions which are widespread all over europe.

The main characters of these mostly in winter months practiced traditions are hybrid / antropomorphic figures, embodied through people behung with bells and wraped in natural Materials ( moss / animal skins / branches.. ). Stechers main interest does not lie in a direct tonal translation of these characters and their appearance. Rather, his focus is concentrated on certain characteristics and topics that these creatures embody and express / act out. Its motifs and themes like transformation, moments of transtion and passage ( eg. winter expulsion ), relation between human – nature but also crudeness and fury, coarseness, death, fertility which are appealing to Stecher and which he puts into tonal form. He works with a raw, undefined palette of sounds aswell as repetetive rhythm to create his compositions.
